Frankenhout wins 2006 Toyota Yaris Cup

18th September 2006

During the penultimate race weekend of the season, Christiaan Frankenhout (Kormelink Motorsport) was able to secure title victory in the 2006 Toyota Yaris Cup. Isolde Holderied witnessed the exciting decision at the Salzburgring and reviews an eventful race weekend.

Second place in the race two was sufficient for Frankenhout to win the title. Charlie Geipel, brother of the 2005 Yaris Cup winner Philip Geipel, won his first race in the series for young talents and crossed the finishing line ahead of the competition in race two. On Saturday, Steve Kirsch had been able to triumph ahead of Heiko Hammel. Having recorded 209 points in the overall classification, Frankenhout managed to secure the title prematurely, ahead of his closest competitors Hammel (163 points) and Swiss driver Raffi Bader (155 points).

"Since Frankenhout already had so many points, it was relatively obvious he would decide the championship in his favour," said Isolde, who was once more part of the event to attend to the drivers. "My particular praise goes to Charlie Geipel. A victory in his first year, his apprenticeship year so to speak, is a great achievement."

Next to assisting the drivers, Isolde was also jury member of the Drift Challenge, which took place on Saturday evening as a part of the side programme of races 11 and 12 of the Yaris Cup. Despite light rain, several thousand visitors came to see spectacular drifts, which were rated with scores from zero to ten. Isolde participated in the jury decisions for the second time following the race weekend on the Nürburgring and was thrilled by the competition: "Drivers, spectators, and the jury all had great fun. The feedback from the fans was overwhelming and leaves us hungry for more."
